Abstract

130,744. D. F. & M. Engineering Co., and Ford, W. V. Aug. 3, 1918. Bicycles; frames.-Frames of motor or other cycles are formed of a pair of spaced sheet-metal sides A which are attached at their forward ends to the steering-head and then slope downwards and pass rearwards at the two sides of the back wheel to form the valances of the rear mud-guard. The guard is completed by a cover or roof fixed to the valances, and, at the front, the upper edges of the sides are preferably joined by a roof or cover B. The engine E is arranged between the sides and is mounted upon a removable base-plate A<4> connecting together the two sides. The edges of the sides are strengthened by flanges a, a<1>, and the ball head C has a pair of wings c which enter between the front portions of the flanges and are fixed to the sides, the wings having flanges c', c<2> continued round the ball head. A removable cover ax is arranged over the engine and gear-box and carries an independently removable cover a<xx> for the magneto G. The fuel and oil tanks may be arranged between the front portions of the sides. A platform H built upon the rear portion of the frame may be used as a luggage-carrier or for carrying the seat, and the rear wheel axle may ba mounted in stays or on semi-elliptic springs. A guard a<3> prevents mud from being thrown on to the engine. The frame sides may be ribbed or fluted. According to the Provisional Specification, (1) the rear portion of the frame is closed at the top by sheet metal which is carried down between the sides behind the engine, (2) the socket for the seat-pillar may be formed with, or carried by, a lug fixed in position between the rear portions of the frame side.
