Abstract
1306914 Coating apparatus HARRIS-INTERTYPE CORP 19 April 1971 [20 May 1970] 26955/71 Heading B2L [Also in Division Dl] In a paper-board making machine 8 the starch adhesive is applied by means of an applicator roller which is heated in order to preheat the adhesive to a temperature just below its gelatinization temperature. The applicator roller 12 is hollow and is heated by water passing through it, the water being supplied from surge tank 24 and heated in heatexchanger 36. Baffle 14 is provided in the applicator roll to prevent the direct flow of water from inlet to outlet. Heat is supplied to the heat exchanger by means of steam supplied via conduit 46 and valve 48 which is operated in response to the temperature, as registered by sensor 40, of the water between the heat exchanger 36 and the roller 12. This permits the temperature of the surface of roller 12 to be maintained at between 5‹ and 15‹F below the gelatinization point of the adhesive. The roller is rotated by motor 62 which also controls a switch 60 by means of a relay 58 so that pump 34 can only circulate the heating water when the roller is rotating. As illustrated in Fig. 5 the applicator roller 12 may rotate in a bath of adhesive 108 in cooperation with a cooled doctor roller 110.
