Abstract

979, 402. Web coating apparatus. ALGEMENE KUNSTZIJDE UNIE N.V. May 13, 1963 [May 18, 1962], No. 18814/63. Heading D1L. Apparatus for coating plans with lacquer comprises a lacquer tank having a vertical drying shaft connected thereto, means for transporting the film through the lacquer tank and the drying shaft, means for collecting the film, and a system for the circulation of warm air in the drying shaft, a blowing chamber, connected to a circulating system for cooling air, being provided at the top of the drying shaft below the exit guiding roller, passage of air from the blowing chamber being regulated by an adjustable constriction in the upper wall of the chamber. In one embodiment, a film 3 of regenerated cellulose is guided by rollers 4 and 9 through slit 6 in the wall of tank 7 filled with lacquer 10. The film is passed upwardly through shaft 5, past doctor rollers 11, through slit 15, and adjustable slit 14 and is removed at 13. Hot air, which enters the shaft at 16 via fan 18 is maintained at e.g. 120‹C. by circulation, at intervals down the shaft through heat exchangers 20, 23. Air is discharged at 25. Between slits 14 and 15, cooling air is blown in at 28 via heat exchange 29. From the space adjustable slit 14, air is extracted by fan 31, through line 30 and is partly blown through line for recirculation through line 28. By regulating the recirculation of air by means of valve 34 and by adjustment of slit 14, the blowing chamber formed between slits 14 and 15 is maintained at above atmospheric pressure. This enables the pressure in the shaft below slit 15 to be maintained at at least atmospheric and so prevents leakage in of cold air on to the film.
