Abstract

1303738 Artificial knee joints ROBERT KELLIE & SON Ltd 17 May 1971 [8 June 1970] 27496/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] An artificial knee-joint flexure-control mechanism comprises a piston 11 reciprocable within an encircling circumferentially adjustable clamp (13), Fig. 2 (not shown) capable of applying controlled frictional resistance to piston movement, and a mechanical connection 8 between the piston 1 and a pivot bolt (5), Fig. 5 (not shown) which is rotatable in proportion to knee-joint flexure. The clamp (13) is an axially split cylinder whose circumference is adjusted by an encircling manually adjustable spring band (14). The mechanism is pivotally attached to the shin portion 4 of the knee-joint. The connection 8 is locked to a squared centre section (10) of the bolt (5), and also includes a hook member 9 which engages a rod 12. A compression spring 15 carried on the rod 12 tends to straighten the knee joint.
