Abstract

1,193,634. Artificial arms; splints; exercising device. HUGH STEEPER Ltd. 9 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 25954/66. Headings A5R and A6M. A device for flexing a natural or prosthetic arm at the elbow comprises a cylinder 1A-1C fixed to the upper part 15 of an arm splint or prosthetic arm and a sleeve 4 closed at one end fitted over the cylinder and attached to the forearm part 16, a gas storage flask 18 within the cylinder being connected to the space 4A within the sleeve, so that when the space receives gas from the flask the sleeve slides on the cylinder and pivots the forearm part 16 relative to the upper arm part 15. A wire 8 attached at a point 9 to the sleeve extends over a pulley 10 on the upper arm part 15 and along a groove in a quadrant 11 which is fixed to the forearm part, the wire being fixed at the other end to the quadrant at a pont 8A. Movement of the point 9 by the sleeve moves the quadrant and the forearm part about an elbow pivot 17. When pressure in the sleeve is released the forearm drops under its own weight so that the point 9 and the sleeve 4 return to their starting positions.
