Abstract
1303607 Cupping PAUMIER Inc 11 June 1971 [6 July 1970] 27492/71 Heading B3Q [Also in Division B5] The downward, drawing stroke in a press for drawing metal or plastics is opposed by a first piston in a cylinder and by a second piston operable by movement of the first for increasing resistance to the stroke. As applied to a press having a conventional arrangement of dies for cutting out and shaping blanks to form cans over a stationary male die 17, the resistance to downward movement of the upper dies 39, 41 is applied, through pins 18, to a lower clamping ring 19. The first piston 52 is depressed by the pins into engagement with the second piston 62. Fluid under pressure is supplied to the bottom part 63 of the cylinder, through a pipe 66, and to the upper chamber 51, through a passage 67. Preferably the cylinder wall is made in two parts connected by bolts 60, the first piston 54 passing through a partition 57 and a vented space 58 to engage the second piston 62. The initial position of piston 62 is adjusted by nuts 65 on a screwthreaded stem 61 of the piston.
