Abstract

1301669 Tubular heat exchangers H V SALT 12 June 1970 [10 Dec 1969] 60248/69 Heading F4S Mounted within an upright flue pipe 8 (e.g. by welded-on supports 10) is a tubular body 1 with a hollow wall forming an air or water jacket 2 around a central passage 3 open at its lower end, the jacket 2 being connected by duct means 6, 7 to a fluid venting or circulating system. The central passage at its upper end is closed either by a wall 12 or by a normally closed damper (17, Fig. 4) and there may optionally be lateral passages 15, Fig. 3, to the face from the central passage 3. In use, the flue gases flow around the body 1 and into the central passage 3 which they leave by its lower end and/or by the lateral passages 15. The passages 15 may be controlled by valve means. The space between the body and the wall of the flue may comprise a plurality of ducts for the flue gases. The wall 8 itself may be hollow, forming a second fluid jacket encircling the jacket 2. Vanes or ribs may be provided on the body 1 to deflect the flue gases on to the heat exchange surfaces. The body 1 is shown as parallel cylindrical but may be tapered and oval, rectangular, triangular or hexagonal in in cross-section. The body including the passage 3 may be flared at one or both ends, or it may be barrel-shaped.
