A heat exchange unit 1, usable as a hot water boiler, steam generator, or air heater comprises a hollow body fitted in a flue 11. Exhaust gases flow through venting openings 8, in the side walls of the body and through an upper central opening 5 controlled by an adjustable baffle plate 6. In modifications the body may be formed with its venting openings at the bottom of its side walls, or be formed from tubes. Hot water produced by the unit may be used in central heating system or in a calorifier.
