Abstract
1301377 I C engine exhaust manifolds ARVIN INDUSTRIES Inc 18 June 1970 [2 Jan 1970] 29620/70 Heading F1B An inner shell 112 is formed by a plurality of annular sleeves 130 defining respective chambers 126....129 having inlet conduits 143 carried in inlets 120 projecting from an outer shell 111. All but one of the sleeves 130 has an annular offset portion 134, 134<SP>1</SP>, 134<SP>11</SP> at one end which guides the adjacent end of the next adjacent sleeve for relative thermal expansion or contraction and an outwardly projecting outlet 139 from one of the chambers 127 is slidably carried in an outwardly projecting outlet 117 on the outer shell 111. A compressible thermal insulating material 148 is provided between the shells 111 and 112 and between the inlets 120 and inlet conduits 143 which are in fixed sealing engagement with the flanges 124. In a further embodiment, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the outer shell is a longitudinally split metal casting (210) and the annular offset end portions (234) of the inner shell sleeves (230) each receive the adjacent end of the adjacent sleeve therewithin. The sleeve inlet conduits (243) and the outlet conduit (239), on an intermediate sleeve, are corrugated and slidably and sealingly received in the inlets and an outlet projecting from the outer shell. Insulation between the shells (210, 212) is provided by an air gap therebetween. The sheet metal components of the manifolds may be welded together rather than connected by rolled seams.
