Abstract

1301140 Methacrylic acid JAPANESE GEON CO Ltd 5 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 47271/70 Addition to 1282934 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Methacrylic acid is prepared by heating a gaseous mixture of methacrolein and molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst comprising molybdenum, arsenic, phosphorus and oxygen. The atomic ratio of molybdenum to arsenic is 7 to 30:1 and of molybdenum to phosphorus is 5 to 30:1. The molybdenum, arsenic and phosphorus are at least in part bound to oxygen, e.g. as oxides, and the catalyst may be supported on a carrier. Optionally boron, silicon, tungsten, cadmium, germanium, lead, tin and/or indium may be present, with gaseous diluents, e.g. steam, for the reaction.
