Polyethylene terephthalate is prepared by heating a mixture of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol to at least 260‹ C. under superatmospheric pressure and thereafter heating the mixture to at least 260‹ C. under subatmospheric pressure in the presence of antimony pentoxide catalyst. The catalyst may be present throughout the whole process and the process may be continuous.
