Abstract

1300879 Independent rear suspension; mounting differential gears BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 3 June 1971 [13 June 1970] 18820/71 Headings B7D and B7H In a suspension for the rear wheels 6 and the final drive housing 4 of a motor vehicle, wheel suspension arms 3 are pivoted on an auxiliary frame 1 connected to the vehicle superstructure by resilient mountings 2, and the final drive housing 4 is rigidly connected to the frame 1 and connected to the superstructure by a further resilient mounting 7 which is offset from the longitudinal centre line 11 of the vehicle towards the side of the vehicle on which the final drive crownwheel 10 is situated. The offset of the mounting 7 avoids twisting of the frame 1 by the torque reaction from the housing 4 during acceleration and braking, and the amount e of the offset is given by the formula:- where l is the distance of the mounting 7 from the mountings 2 and i is the final drive reduction ratio.
