1299711 Potassium dihydrogen phosphate W & H M GOULDING Ltd 17 Dec 1969 [20 Sept 1968 6 June 1969] 44799/68 and 28659/69 Heading C1A Potassium dihydrogen phosphate is produced from phosphate rock, potassium bisulphate, sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid the weight percentages of hydrogen other than in water and sulphate ion in solution being controlled relative to phosphorus pentoxide to values of H/P 2 O 5 > 2% and SO 4 =/P 2 O 5 > 3% by weight to ensure precipitation of calcium sulphate which is separated from the reaction mixture. Alternatively, phosphate rock is reacted with hydrochloric acid to give a mixture of phosphoric acid, calcium phosphate and calcium chloride, which is reacted with further phosphate rock to form a suspension of dicalcium phosphate and phosphate rock; limestone, lime, magnesium hydroxide or magnesium carbonate is then added to produce a slurry of dicalcium phosphate and phosphate rock in a solution of calcium chloride; the calcium chloride is separated off and the mixture reacted with potassium bisulphate, sulphuric acid and phosphoric acid as above. The potassium dihydrogon phosphate may be precipitated from the phosphoric acid solution by the addition of a watermiscible organic solvent, which may be recovered by distillation.
