Claims (11)

1. WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A process for the production of potassium dihydrogen phosphate/potassium nitrate mixtures by reaction of phosphate rock with nitric acid and subsequent reaction of the mass produced with acid potassium sulphate or potassium bisulphate, the calcium in the reaction mass being balanced approximately stoichiometrically by sulphate and the potassium sulphate and the acid concentrations being controlled in order to obtain calcium sulphate in a filterable form, and calcium sulphate formed is separated to provide a solution containing potassium nitrate and potassium dihydrogen phosphate - from which the potassiun dihydrogen phosphate/potassium nitrate mixture is separated.
2. A process as claimed in claim 1 wherein the saidacid potassium sulphate or potassium bisulphate is obtained by the reaction of sulphuric acid on potassium chloride or potassium sulphate.
3. A process as claimed in claim 1 or 2 where^in a mixture of nitric acid and phosphoric acid is used for the reaction with phosphate rock.
4. . A process as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the weight percentage of hydrogen (other than in water) in solution relative to the phosphorus pentoxide is greater than 2$ and the weight percentage of sulphate ion relative to phosphorus pentoxide is greater than 3$.
5. A process as claimed in claim k , wherein the weight percentage of hydrogen relative to phosphorus pentoxide, is greater than 3$ and the. weight percentage of sulphate ion relative to phosphorus pentoxide is greater than 5».
6. A process as claimed in claim 5 wherein weight is about kf and the weight percentage of sulphate ion relative to phosphorus pentoxide is 6 to 7 .
7. A process as claimed in any of claims 1 to 6 in which at least some of the mother liquor from which calcium sulphate, potassium dihydrogen phosphate and potassium nitrate have been separated is recycled to the reaction medium.
8. A process as claimed in any of claims 1 to 7 wherein a mixture of potassium dihydrogen phosphate and potassium nitrate is recovered in solid form from the reaction mixture.
9. A process as claimed in claim 8 wherein potassium dihydrogen phosphate and potassium nitrate are precipitated from the aqueous phosphoric acid solution constituting the reaction mixture after separation therefrom of calcium sulphate by the addition o a water miscible organic solvent to the aqueous solution and separating the resulting solids from a mother liquor comprising in solution phosphoric acid, potassium dihydrogen phosphate, potassium nitrate and organic solvent.
10. A process for the production of potassium dihydrogen phosphate/potassium nitrate mixture substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to either of the accompanying drawings.
11. A mixture comprising potassium dihydrogen phosphate and potassium nitrate when prepared by a process as claimed in any of claims 1 to 10, For the Applicants Dr.Yitzhak Hoes
