Abstract

1299481 Evaporators; plate-type APV Co Ltd 3 May 1971 [6 May 1970] 21794/70 Heading B1B Liquid is evaporated in the form of falling films in a pack of separable plates 2, 3, with peripheral gaskets 8, arranged face-to-face to provide flow spaces; steam (or other heating medium) being supplied to alternate flow spaces from header 5 and apertures 7. The liquidto-be-evaporated is fed through inlet 4 and apertures 6 to each chamber 13, at the top of the plates, and undergoes partial flash vaporization as it passes through holes 15 and 16 into the two adjacent chambers 10 whence the mixture of liquid and vapour passes, with further flashing, through laterally-spaced orifices 17 and 18 across the top of the plates bounding each evaporation space so that the liquid impinges against and flows down the opposing plate. The concentrated liquid and vapours evolved therefrom are withdrawn through ducts (not shown). Modified apparatus is described wherein the feed liquid is primarily flashed in the feed conduit itself; and a mixture of liquid and vapour enters the individual evaporation flow spaces from a single chamber.
