1298958 Cable terminations JOSLYN MFG & SUPPLY CO 18 Dec 1969 [13 Jan 1969] 61790/69 Heading H2E A terminating apparatus 10 for a power cable 12 comprises a porcelain body 22 with ridges 30 and having a ring 46 attached to it by epoxy resin 52. This ring is attached by screws 60 to a lower body part 54 containing a phenolic resin washer 64 which contacts the cable shield 20. Above the washer 64 is a conducting elastomeric filler 68 which establishes electrical connection with the cable shield 20 and part 54 and thence ring 46. The end of the cable shield is cut off and chamfered and the cable insulation 18 projects beyond filler 68 into contact with a non-conducting elastomeric filler 70, washer 92 and phenolic resin tubes 90 whose lower ends are tapered as shown. The space between washer 92 and the top of the tubes 90 is filled with silicone liquid and slots 90a are provided in the end of one of the tubes 90 to allow free flow of liquid between the inside and outside of the tubes. A ring 36 is attached to the upper end of body 22 by epoxy resin 42 and a cap 74 is seated in a recess 36a in ring 36 and attached to the ring by cap screws 78. Springs 96 bear on a disc 94 in cap 74 and on the upper end of the upper tube 90 to provide a compression force on fillers 68, 70. The disc 94 is screwed down by nuts 102 on rods 100, the correct compression of the springs 96 being when grooves 98a are just visible above disc 94, the grooves 98a being formed in guide rods 98 screwed into the top of upper tube 90. The cable insulation 18 is cut away and chamfered and a terminal 72 is crimped on to the exposed conductor 14. The plurality of springs 96 may be replaced by one large central spring (96A, Fig. 2, not shown).
