Abstract

1298570 Moulding room units R B RICHARDS 23 Dec 1969 [30 Dec 1968 8 April 1969] 62517/69 Heading B5A [Also in Division E1] A portable dwelling unit comprising ceiling, floor, side walls and end walls which may have door and window openings, is moulded by sequentially applying to successive upper faces of an intermittently rotated former 16, a coating of release agent, a coating of resin on to which glass fibre is applied and the resin worked thereinto by a segmented roller, thermally insulating cellular material to bond to the resin, further resin into which glass fibre is worked and, after the resin has set, collapsing the former 16 for removal of the tubular moulded structure to which the end walls are fitted. The former 16 comprises sections 18, 19 which are connected to a section 17 by hinges 20 permitting their inward collapse after sequential removal of links 21, 22, connecting to a supporting frame 5 which is supported at a pivot 2 on a triangulated support frame 3 attached to legs 4, and at one end at a pivot 12 on a supporting frame 13 which is removable to permit axial removal of the dwelling from the collapsed former 16 by an overhead crane. The frame 5 is rotated by engagement of a toothed ring 8 thereof by a gear 9 driven from a motor 10, and is stabilized by the engagement of guide pulleys 7, supported by the logs 4, within a frame ring 6. The thermally insulating cellular material may be impregnated with preservative against insect or mould attack and may comprise corrugated cardboard wound on to the former with simultaneous application of resin, or preformed bats of foamed plastics which may be semi-rigid, or if rigid are configured to rounded comers of the dwelling by bending whilst hot about "V" notches provided in the interior bend surface of the bat. Gaps may be left between or slots may be cut into the thermally insulating material to provide strengthening anchors of the glass fibre resin or inter-connection between the inner and outer layers thereof. The dwelling unit is preferably moulded with outwardly bowed walls, corrugations may be moulded into the roof or at the corners thereof to serve for water drainage. Windows and doors may cut into the moulded unit but preferably are moulded into tubular structure. Both end walls may have the windows and doors, or preferably as one end wall may be blank and the other may have a window, door, and an air conditioning unit. Windows, electrical wiring or plumbing fittings may be located on the former, or otherwise incorporated during the moulding. Bearers may be moulded into the insulating material of the floor of the unit for subsequent seating on a foundation frame of steel, or concrete, or blocks. A plurality of units may be assembled side by side, end to end, or vertically. The unit may subsequently be fitted with internal partitions, either of similar construction or of thin panel board or plywood.
