Abstract
1298270 Sonar; electro-acoustic transducers WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 1 July 1970 [9 July 1969] 31828/70 Headings H4D and H4J] A side looking sonar apparatus includes an elongated transducer means whose active surface is wider at one end thereof than in the centre. An array comprises narrow transducer elements 68 and wider elements 67 mounted on the arc of a circle whose radius equals the height of the array above the sea-bed. The elements are arranged such that their axes intersect at the maximum range on the line of focus F. The width of the elements 67 is such that they contribute substantially nothing to the energy received by the sea-bed at short ranges (around point n), thus simulating a short array giving high depth of focus. At long ranges (around point m) all the transducers are effective, thus providing a long array giving good resolution. The array may also be formed on a straight line (Fig. 16, not shown). The elements may be either piezoelectric or ceramic (e.g. barium titanate) or magneto-strictive. The received pulses are passed through a time varying gain amplifier to a magnetic tape, cathode ray tube or pen recorder. Fig. 2 not shown)).
