Abstract

1,125,152. Sonar systems; magnetostrictive transducers. MARCONI CO. Ltd. 3 Dec., 1965 [19 Jan., 1965], No. 2375/65. Headings H4D and H4J. In a sonar system a sub-aqueous region is scanned rapidly in the azimuthal plane by periodically transmitting an extended pulse of pressure waves substantially isotropically and sweeping the direction of maxium received signal strength of a directional receiving transducer array over at least a fraction of the azimuthal plane during the transmission of the pulse. In the embodiment illustrated in Fig. 1 (provisional), a 50kc/s acoustic pulse is transmitted by a cylindrical magneto-strictive transducer 3 for every 8À1 revolutions of a magneto-strictive receiving array 15 about a vertical axis 5, the pulse duration (150ms) being approximately equal to the period of rotation of the array 15. Timebase generators 9 and 11, synchronized with the rotation of the array 15, provide deflection waveforms for a cathode ray tube 14 the beam of which is intensity-modulated by target echo signals received by the array 15, and produce a raster which comprises ten inter-leaved spirals of eight turns each, the start of each spiral corresponding to the initiation of a transmitted acoustic pulse. The use of such a "tenstart" raster enables a target range resolution (in the resulting P.P1 display) equivalent to that given by a raster comprising a single 80-turn spiral to be obtained at one-tenth the receiving array rotation rate that would be required for the single-spiral raster. Target range gating may be provided by gating an echo signal amplifier 16. Transducer construction:-The transmitting transducer (Fig. 2, provisional, not shown) comprises a toroidally-wound stack of annular magneto-strictive laminae (31). The receiving array (Fig. 3, provisional, not shown) comprises a 2 feet row of cores, each core comprising a stack of #-shaped laminae. A winding (153) is wound over the "legs" of the # and the array is polarised by a permanent magnet.
