Abstract
1,069,971. Acoustic delay lines. MULLARD Ltd. Sept. 23, 1964 [July 19, 1963], No. 28705/63. Heading H3U. In a delay line formed by successive reflections of an acoustic beam in a glass disc the beam is given a convergent-divergent form in its several traverses of the disc by injecting it into the disc from a curved surface having a radius of curvature equal to twice the disc radius. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 8 a transmitter transducer 9 is secured, to a flat face of the disc and directs a plane wave to an opposite section A, A<SP>1</SP> of the disc periphery having a radius 2R where R equals the disc radius. The convergent-divergent beam reflected by this section AA<SP>1</SP> strikes the disc periphery on the opposite side as denoted by the dash lines, the centre line of the beam denoted by solid lines striKing the disc periphery at successive points B, C, D, E, F. The beam reflected from F strikes a further section G, G<SP>1</SP> of the disc periphery having a radius 2R where it is reconverted into parallel rays having a plane wave front, the beam from G, G<SP>1</SP> being received by a transducer 10. The transducers 9, 10 are lead zirconate titanate ceramic poled for shear waves with particle motion normal to the plane of the paper.
