Abstract

1297498 Feeding webs ALBERT-FRANKENTHAL AG. 17 Sept 1971 [18 Sept 1970] 43496/71 Heading B8R Apparatus for feeding paper web from a supply roll to a printing press is provided with a photo-electric control system which produces a signal when the running roll has reached a minimum desired diameter, and this signal is used to effect the operations required to change over to a standby roll. As shown, the supply roll 4 is mounted on an extension 6 of a support shaft 3 formed with a flange 6<SP>1</SP> which abuts one end face of the roll 4. A light guide 9 of optic fibres leads from an aperture 16 in the flange 6<SP>1</SP> to an aperture 11 in the free end of the shaft 3, the guide 9 being housed in bores 7 and 8 formed respectively in the shaft 3 and the flange 6<SP>1</SP>. A photo-cell 12 is positioned to receive light from the guide 9 and is protected from stray light by means of a cover 15 The aperture 16 is normally covered by the roll 4, but is exposed when the latter reaches a minimum diameter d, whereby light is transmitted from the aperture 16 to the photo-cell 12 which produces a signal to initiate the change-over procedure. Mirrors or prisms may replace the guide 9, and the aperture 16 may be formed eccentrically in a rotatably mounted plate 10 to permit adjustment of the position of the aperture relative to the axis of the shaft 3.
