Abstract
1,207,480. Guiding webs. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 21 Aug., 1969 [27 Aug., 1968], No. 41795/69. Heading B8R. A device for maintaining a running web 10, e.g. an endless belt driven by a roller 11, in correct lateral alignment comprises a tracking roller 19 which is supported in a yoke mounted on three legs 31, 32, 33 so arranged that the roller 19 has three degrees of freedom, being pivotable about a steering axis 28 and a swing axis 29 and translatable along the steering axis 28; a spring 36, attached to the yoke 23, biases the roller 19 for movement about the axis 28 in one sense to cause -the web 10 to move laterally toward one end of the roller where the web edge engages a servo mechanism S responsive to the lateral movement to pivot the roller 19 in the opposite sense about the axis 28. The servo-mechanism (Figs. 2 to 5, not shown), includes a pressure roller (37) which bears against the conical surface (35) of a washer (34) engaging the curved edge of the web 10 as it passes round the roller 19 the roller (37) being mounted on a sensing shaft 38 connected to a servo arm 39 and being also attached to one end of a vertical arm 41 whose opposite end is attached to the yoke 23; the arrangement is such lateral movement of the web 10 against the washer (34) causes vertical movement of the arm 41, and hence of the yoke 23, whereby the roller 19 pivots about the axis 28 in a counterclockwise direction. The movement causes the web 10 to move to the right and correct the misalignment. Because of the continuing force exerted by the spring 36 the servo-mechanism S continues to operate thereagainst so that the web 10 is always held in aligned position and does not swing back and forth. The roller 19 translates along the axis 28 to tension the web 10, being urged in this direction by a spring 26, and pivots about the swing axis 29 to keep the tension uniform across the web.
