Abstract

1296967 I. C. engine combustion chambers S W BRIGGS 16 Feb 1970 [20 Feb 1969] 7383/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division C7] The wall surface of the combustion chamber 24 is coated with a base layer 28 of Ni and Al, e.g. by flame spraying a mixture of powdered Ni and Al in an acetylene rich flame, and an outer layer 30 of Cu and Cu 2 O e.g. by flame spraying in a hydrogen-rich flame. The layer 28 may be from 3 to 20mm thick and contain from 5 to 20% Al and 95 to 80% Ni and the layer 30 from 4 to 6mm thick. The coating 26 may have a porosity of 3 to 5% by volume and may be thicker at higher temperature regions of the wall surface, e.g. the centre of the piston head. In the diesel engine shown fuel is injected by a nozzle 22.
