Abstract

1296909 Rotary agitators MUREX Ltd 28 May 1971 [16 June 1970] 29265/70 Heading B1C A rotary agitator includes a rotatable shaft carrying at least one disc symmetrically disposed about the axis of the shaft and being provided with heating or cooling means and with fins. The sides of the disc may be either flat or convexly or concavely curved or corrugated. The fins, which may project from one or both sides of each disc and from the shaft may be either flat or curved. Typical materials from which to construct the agitator are stainless steel, aluminium, composite plastics materials and, for use with corrosive substances, titanium, zirconium and tantalum. The heating or cooling can be electrical or based on a heat exchange fluid. In the construction shown, fluid is passed through a space 38 and apertures 36, 34, 30 into annular regions 26 to transfer heat through the disc surfaces. Spent fluid is withdrawn through the tube 4. The fluid may be water, steam, diphenyl or oil. Electrical heating may be used by employing electrical heating elements in the disc or fins. For electrical cooling, use may be made of the peltier effect. The vessel in which the agitator rotates may have fixed baffles 52.
