1296022 Tumbling C K WALTHER [trading as CARL KURT WALTHER GmbH & CO KG] 4 Feb 1970 [24 May 1969] 5415/70 Heading B3D [Also in Divisions B1 B2 and F2] Apparatus for polishing, crushing, &c. includes a vessel 2 rotatable simultaneously about two intersecting axes x-x, y-y in bearings 7, 7<SP>1</SP>, 24, one of which 24 lies adjacent a neck portion 20, Fig. 5, the vessel 2 being provided with a lid 19 and a spider member 30 for clamping the lid 19 in the closed position, which spider member 30 is engageable with slots 26 of a web member 23<SP>1</SP> to retain the lid 19. A frame 3 mounts the bearing 24 through a support ring 5 and also supports a thrust bearing 4, the frame 3 being rotatable in the bearings 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. A drive pulley 8 is driven by a main motor (10), Fig. 2 (not shown), through a belt (9), to rotate the frame 3, a belt 14 passing over a transmission 11 held stationary on a frame-mounting shaft 6 to transmit rotation to the vessel 2 via a pulley 15 and gear wheels 17, 18. An auxiliary motor (13) for driving the transmission 11 through a bolt (12) allows rotation of the vessel 2 while the frame is held stationary. The lid 19, Fig. 4 (not shown), includes lugs 27 for engagement in slots 26, see also Figs. 6-8 (not shown), of the retaining member 23<SP>1</SP> to form a bayonet joint, arms 28 of the member 30 also engaging the slots 26, while a nut 32 screwed to a stud 34 of the lid allows securing of the closed lid 19. Fork like projections 30<SP>1</SP> of the member 30 engage ribs 19<SP>1</SP> of the lid to prevent relative rotation. A cover 36, restrains escape of material from the vessel on opening, and protects the operator from any vapour emerging under pressure, and grooves 25, 25<SP>1</SP> co-operate with the support ring 5 to provide a further sealing effect.
