Abstract
1,100,782. Homogenising apparatus; mixing apparatus. A. BRATLAND. 18 May, 1965 [21 May, 1964; 9 March, 1965], No., 21007/65. Headings BIC and BIV. To prevent leakage between a stationary part 142 and a rotatable part 141 of a combined motor driven mixing and homogenising arrangement which extends through the base of a container, parallel sealing surfaces 155 and 161 are provided on the parts so that while at rest the parts are sealed but on rotation the rotatable part is axially displaceable a predetermined amount to break the seal. Bearings 157 and 158 and sealing ring 154 ensure tight sealing between the shafts 143 and 139 of the parts. Through-passages 145 in the stationary part are aligned with passages 144 in the other part when axially displaced, and vanes 167 combined with the centrifugal force subjects the material to rapid movement through the passages. The axial displacement is brought about either by the force of reaction on the rotatable part or by the driving motor causing axial displacement of the rotatable part in opposite directions on starting up and stopping the motor. The shaft 143 is secured to the container 110 (Fig. 5, not shown) which is surrounded by an outer container 111, the space therebetween containing heating elements 132 and conduits 127, 129 for circulating cold water so that three treatment stages, namely a heating stage (pasturisation), a homogenising stage, and a cooling stage may be carried out in the same inner container, as in the production of milk products from dried milk. The through passages may extend longitudinally (Fig. 3, not shown).
