Abstract

1294105 Photo-sensitive materials KALLE A G 18 Nov 1969 [9 Dec 1968] 56366/69 Heading G2C A light-sensitive material for producing printing plates comprises a roughened support (or if support is not roughened, embossing the light-sensitive layer as in Specification 1293161) coated with a light-sensitive layer containing a diazonium salt, a quinone chiazide or a diazonium salt condensed with an aldehyde and in or on this layer, an ultraviolet or visible light-sensitive, light-absorbing chemical system which on exposure increases its absorption of light which affects the light-sensitive layer but allows the light-sensitive layer to be exposed and developed. Alternatively, the system may be in a self- supporting layer placed on top of the lightsensitive layer. Specified systems are (i) cyanides of triphenylnethane dyes, (ii) photochromic compounds (iii) diazonium salts or azides when placed in a layer above the lightsensitive layer and (iv) hydrocarbon halides with lenco dyes or merocyenise dyes and azo dyes. The material may be exposed to a continuous tone original and developed to remove the top layer (if present) and the more soluble areas of the light-sensitive layer to produce a continuous tone plate. Comparisons with materials not containing the system are given and on exposure to a step wedge and development, less steps are produced in the comparitive materials. The plate may be heated after development to increase its printing life. The light-sensitive layer may be coated with a polyvinyl alcohol layer before applying the layer containing the chemical system.
