Abstract

1294064 Fibrilliform products DEXTER CORP 28 May 1971 [23 Sept 1970] 17882/71 Heading B5B [Also in Division D2] A random matrix of water-dispersable, attenuated, fibriliform thermoplastic resin, which is incapable on its own of forming a self-supporting waterleaf, is made by dissolving the polymer in a solvent and effecting precipitation under shearing conditions. The product, of which at least 75% may pass through a 35-mesh screen, is useful as an additive to papermaking fibres at the wet end of a papermaking machine, especially fibres intended for making tea-bags, since it renders the bags heat-sealable. About 30% of the paper may constitute this product. In examples a P.V.C.-P.V. acetate copolymer is used, dissolved in acetone and precipitated with aqueous acetone below 25‹ C. The paper may exhibit a concentration gradient of the polymer across its thickness, one side being substantially polymer-free.
