Abstract

1293842 Boots &c LARKHILL SOLING CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [18 March 1970] 13157/ 70 Heading A3B [Also in Division C3] A method of making an article of footwear comprises effecting adhesion between an elastomeric sole and the upper by the action of heat and pressure, the surface of the sole carrying a halogen donor and an adhesive. The halogen donor may be 1,3 dichloro-5, 5- dimethylhydantoin and the adhesive may be a solvent-based or hot-melt polyurethane or neoprene adhesive. The method may comprise these steps: (a) a solution of the halogen donor in a volatile solvent is brushed or wiped on to the sole, and the solvent is evaporated, (b) adhesive is applied to the sole, (c) the upper is coated with adhesive (d) the sole and upper are bonded by heat and pressure. The solution at (a) may contain 0.5-10% w/w of an adhesive, e.g. a polyurethane adhesive. In an alternative method the halogen donor is applied to the sole in admixture with the adhesive. When a solven-based adhesive is used, the halogen-donor is dissolved in the adhesive; when a hot-melt adhesive the halogen donor is dispersed in solid form through the adhesive. The mixture contains 0.05-20%, preferably 1-10% by weight of available halogen.
