Abstract

1293789 Piston-rod seals UNITED STIRLING (SWEDEN) AB & CO KB 18 Sept 1971 43599/71 Heading F2B In a sealing device for a hot gas engine pistonrod 1 or other reciprocable cylindrical element where it extends through a wall 2 separating spaces 3, 4 containing fluid at different pressures and comprising two sealing rings 9 and 10 housed in axially spaced grooves 7 and 8, respectively, in the wall, the space 13 between the rings is connected to the suction side of a compressor 11 whose delivery side is connected to the higher pressure side 3 of the wall 2. The space 3 contains gas at working pressure and the space 4 is at substantially atmospheric pressure. A buffer chamber 12 and an oil-separator 16 are included in the compressor suction line and a non-return 15 is fitted in the delivery line 14. A connection including a pressure-reduction valve 17 is provided between the space 3 and the compressor suction line. In use, the pressure in the space 13 is set by the valve 17 and any backing through the sealing ring 9 and the gas supplied through valve 17 is pumped back to the space 3 by the compressor.
