Abstract
1293704 Filling containers CARTER ENG CO 19 April 1971 [1 May 1970] 25117/71 Heading B8C A container 72 being filled by a vacuum filling head 16 is surrounded by a shroud 74 which can be sealed to a base plate 38 supporting the container by a sealing element 90 carried by the shroud or by the plate, and sealed to the container mouth by an element 76 carried by the shroud or by the container so that the space between the shroud and the container can be evacuated through pipes 40. The element 76 also seals against an annular gasket in the filling head when the plate 38 is raised by cylinder 34. The filling head includes an annular groove covered by a screen and divided into two semicircular halves each being connected to a vacuum source, the atmosphere, and a dust collector. During filling the container is evacuated alternately through the two halves, the screen being cleaned when the vacuum is switched between the halves by a reverse flow of air. While a container and shroud is between loaded and unloaded between the plate 38 and a conveyor 80 by a suction gripper 68 or 218, dust is collected by the dust collector. The filling machine is mounted on three semispherical bearings, one of which is carried by a weight responsive element 22. The shroud is lifted on and off the container by an inflatable member connected to a lifting member 210 and carries three spring pressed buttons to locate the shroud axially of the container. The container may have a lining or may comprise a lug the top of either of which being drawn over the shroud.
