Abstract

1293551 Gun sights BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 5 Jan 1970 [6 Jan 1969 28 Feb 1969] 834/69 and 10904/69 Heading F3C An artillery gun vehicle carries a sighting apparatus 21 separate from the gun which gun comprises a barrel mounted on transverse trunnions for elevation. The sighting apparatus 21 has a levelling means. A shaft 14 separate from the gun but maintained parallel to the trunnions thereof is connected to the horizontal transverse axis of the sighting apparatus 21 through a knuckle joint 16 and there is provided means for rotating the shaft 14 through the same angle as the gun barrel turns about the trunnions on elevation. After the shaft is rotated during elevation of the barrel with the trunnions inclined to the horizontal the sighting apparatus 21 is levelled the movement thereof being communicated to the gun barrel to compensate for mis-alignment thereof due to inclined trunnions. The sighting apparatus is provided with an elevation scale 26 and an azimuth sight scale 27, the levelling means comprising a pair of bubble levels 28, 29. The inclination of the shaft may be effected in a selfpropelled gun by connecting the shaft to a quadrant gear which is turned by a motor operated by a tilt sensing device (Fig. 4, not shown). In a further embodiment the shaft is mounted on the gun platform (Figs. 5, 6, not shown).
