Regulating; valves.-In a two-stroke-cycle engine having two or more cylinders with pistons of two diameters, each pair of cylinders is controlled by a reciprocating hollow cylindrical valve 3, Fig. 3, divided into two compartments. The lower part controls the admission of the charge through ports 5, 6 into the spaces above the pump pistons 2, and the upper part controls the transfer of the compressed charge through diametrically opposite ports 8, 10 to the combustion chambers of the cylinders. The engine is cross-connected so that each pump delivers to the opposite cylinder. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the valve is in two parts 21, 22 connected by a flexible or jointed rod 23 which may be adjustable for regulating the valve openings. The parts 21, 22 have open ends facing each other, the outer ends being closed. The port 32 communicating with the carburettor is connected by two closed passages 33, 34 to ports leading to the pumps 2. The compressed charge passes to the interior of the valve on one side through ports 36, 37, and on the other side through port 35 which is cleared by the upper edge of the port 22 in its lowest position.
