Abstract
1292645 Reticulated foam containing laminates J WINKLER 7 Nov 1969 [8 Nov 1968] 54724/69 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C1 and C7] A laminate is made by bonding a reticulated, carbon particle coated, flexible, organic, polymeric foam material to a woven rayon fabric or between a rigid acoustical tile and a coloured fabric, the foam material being made by permeating an open cell, flexible, organic, polymeric foam material in a closed system with a mixture comprising a stable diluent gas or ethylenically unsaturated gaseous hydrocarbon and a gaseous hydrocarbon which will explosively decompose to its elements in the absence of oxygen with the production of particulate carbon and hydrogen when exposed to alocalized concentration of energy, and thereafter exploding said gaseous hydrocarbon by generating a localized concentration of energy in said closed system. The open cell foam is preferably a polyurethane. The gaseous hydrocarbon may be acetylene or a derivative thereof. The inert diluent gas may be helium or nitrogen. The ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon may be ethylene or propylene. The localized concentration of energy may be in the form of an electric spark, a laser beam; X-rays, γ-rays or electron beams, alternatively, detonation caps of mercury fulminate or lead azide may be employed. The colour of the reticulated product may be varied by suspending powdery pigments or metals in the mixture. The products of the invention may be used for lining fabrics, as household sponges or in the preparation of acoustical tiles.
