Abstract

1348552 Composite expandable resinous sheet material DOW CHEMICAL CO 1 June 1971 18251/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division C3] A composite sheet comprises upper 12 and lower 14 layers of flexible synthetic resinous film quilted together by intersecting seals 16, 18 and containing in each quilt pocket 20 at least one particle 22 of expandable synthetic resinous material. The films, which may be of polystyrene, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate or polyvinyl fluoride may be sealed together to form rectangular, square, diamond or circular shaped pockets. The particles may be of material which foams on the application of heat, e.g. by the application thereto of a high frequency electrical or RF field or by conductive or radiant heating. The Specification describes the preparation of expandable resinous material by reacting in the presence of a blowing agent, e.g. n-pentane or carbon dichloride difluoride and a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide and under conditions under which foaming is inhibited: (a) citraconic anhydride, ethyl acrylate, divinyl benzene and ochlorostyrene, styrene, vinyl toluene or 3,4- dichlorostyrene ; (b) o-chlorostyrene, #-hydroxyethyl acrylate and divinyl benzene and (c) ochlorostyrene, benzonitrile and divinyl benzene. The composite sheet material of the invention may be converted into a cushioned packaging material by the application of heat to expand the particles.
