On distingue deux types de formulations de mascara, à savoir les formules dites "crème" et les formules résistant à l'eau dites "waterproof". Ces polymères sont avantageux en matière de prix de revient. En revanche, ils ne conviennent pas pour les formules résistant à l'eau, car ils sont dégradés par les solvants organiques chimiquement agressifs contenus dans ces compositions. On utilise donc pour ces dernières des flacons en polychlorure de vinyle. Cependant, ce dernier polymère est plus coûteux que les polyoléfines et peut présenter des effets cancérigènes en raison de la présence de chlore dans sa molécule.
