Abstract

1291635 Drying wood veneer MOORE DRY KILN CO OF OREGON 6 March 1970 [27 March 1969] 10758/70 Heading F4G A process for drying wood veneer of widely differing moisture content and which is peeled from a log containing intermixed heart wood and sap wood consists of (a) passing the veneer portions through a first drying chamber 10 on a conveyer, wherein 30-40% of the veneer is dried to a predetermined moisture content, (b) passing the veneer portions over a moisture detector 15 which marks, with water soluble dye, those portions of veneer which are insufficiently dried, (c) allowing the veneer to arrive on conveyer 20 at which graders at grading stations 25a to 25e remove undyed veneer portions, and (d) passing the insufficiently dried veneer to a second drying chamber of substantially less drying capacity than the first having a vertically disposed, substantially elliptical path, sectioned loop conveyer system 35 with idler rollers 34 supporting the conveyer on the arcuate portions 35c of the loop which carries the veneer from conveyer 31 between webs in sandwich fashion through the centre of air box (48) in area 45, into which hot air from a plurality of spaced orifices is directed at a velocity of 2500 to 10,000 linear feet per minute at a temperature above 350‹ F. in both directions normal to the plane of the veneer. The veneer then moves to area 55 where air at ambient temperatures is directed on to it, and afterwards is passed to a lower level where it is monitored by a second moisture detector 37. Sufficiently dried veneer is removed by graders in second grading station 39, the dyed insufficiently dried material being allowed to pass, via conveyer 18 into the drying oven for second cycle. The second drier is preferably arranged at right angles to the first drier to provide a 90 degree change in grain orientation of the veneer between the two drying stages.
