1291216 Tool for compressing Clips AMP Inc 27 July 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 35081/71 Heading B4W A tool for compressing clips about flexible tubes to close the tubes comprises handles 2 and 4 each having a jaw and a carrier 36 which can be advanced longitudinally of handle 2 and has notches 44 each for receiving a clip 46, the carrier being connected to handle 4 to cause the carrier to be advanced as the handles are opened. Handle 2 comprises plates 88 and has a groove 30 running its length with a further groove 32 running from the free end of the handel to point P. This groove 32 accepts flanges 38, 40 and 42 of the carrier. An arm 100<SP>1</SP> of spring 100 controls movement of the carrier by engaging in notches 58. Spring 100 is connected to pin 96 which extends through the handles and a slide 98. A pin 104 also extends through the handles and has a roller 106 at each end that engages in a slot 108 in flanged member 16. Jaw 8 has an anvil 64 which has a groove therethrough to accept the carrier. The surface of the anvil has recesses 70 to cause tabs 48 of the clips to be bent appropriately when the jaws are closed. A ratchet 112 co-operates with a pawl 114 to prevent the jaws being opened until they have been fully closed and vice versa. In operation closing of the jaws from the position shown in Fig. 2 causes slide 98 to be moved to the right due to the action of slot 108 on rollers 106 and thus pin 104. This also moves arm 100<SP>1</SP> rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4. On opening of the jaws carrier 36 initally remains stationary thus enabling the closed clip and tube to be removed from between the jaws. Further opening of the jaws causes arm 100<SP>1</SP> to engage end wall 60<SP>1</SP> of notch 58 and move the carrier forwardly. A C-clip 76 engages a flange 40 of the carrier and prevents rearward movement thereof.
