Abstract

1290734 Centrifugal moulding LEYLAND GAS TURBINES Ltd 20 Nov 1970 [28 Nov 1969] 58281/69 Heading B5A Hollow articles, e.g. flame tubes in gas turbines, are formed from a ceramic or similar material, e.g. silicon nitride, in a former 1 having drainage apertures 5, which is rotatably mounted with a slurry injector 8 in a centrifuge 6. In operation a slurry, e.g. a powdered silicon metal, in an emulsion of polyvinyl alcohol with water and methyl alcohol, is thrown from the injector on to a filter paper 9 lining the wall of the former, the liquid passing through the holes 5 and an outlet 7. The "green" article is then removed from the former by splitting the flanges 3 and is subsequently nitrided or fired, or if the former is a member to be lined this subsequent operation is carried out with the article within the former. Holes may be formed in the article by providing similar shaped apertures in the former and pushing out the material of the holes before firing.
