Dynamos, regulating; auxiliary protective or safety devices.- When a fault occurs, the exciter field of an alternator is reversed, and the exciter current is shunted. Normally, the field 1 of the exciter 6 is in series with resistances 2, 4. When a fa.ult occurs, the switch 5 closes under the action of a spring to reverse the direction of the current in the exciter-field 1 and to connect the resistances 2, 4 in parallel across the exciter terminals. By means of an additional contact 7, the switch 5 short-circuits a rheostat 3 in series with the exciter-field 1. Alternatively, a doublethrow switch is employed, and the resistances 2, 4 are normally short-circuited, but are connected in parallel across the exciter terminals when a fault occurs.
