Abstract

1290134 Axial-flow hydraulic pumps and turbines ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 Jan 1970] 3318/70 Headings FIT and F1C A runner comprises a hub 3, radial vanes 2, a peripheral rim 9 and tie bars 14 locating the rim radially relative to the hub. The bars 14 may extend through radial bores 12 in the vanes, bearings for the bars in the bores being provided intermediate the hub and rim to prevent buckling. The bars may be located in slots (21) Figs. 4 to 6 (not shown), in the vanes which are faired by cover plates (19) and the bars may be flattened in the region of the slots. The rim 9 is divided into arcuate segments 10 which are located axially and circumferentially by the radial contact surfaces on segments bosses 7 and vane projections 6. The rim 9 may support an electrical rotor, e.g. the poles of an electric generator, or an annular gear wheel. The bars 14 may have axial bores to house electrical conductors and rotor cooling water conduits. The bars 14 may be pre-tensioned to prevent compressive stress when the rotor is stationary. The vanes 2 may be adjustable.
