Abstract

1287325 Refrigerating BRITISH OXYGEN CO Ltd 28 May 1971 [3 June 1970] 26846/70 Heading F4H Apparatus for cooling a series of workpieces, in particular metal articles, comprises a thermally-insulated chamber 2 housing an endless conveyer, a spray head 36 positioned on the downstream side of a motor-driven fan 38 for spraying liquid nitrogen into the chamber 2, and at least one door 6 giving access to the conveyer, and to pockets in the form of spacedapart clips adapted to carry the workpiece. Each chamber wall has an external surface of plywood enclosing foamed plastics material or other suitable insulant, the insulant being kept in place by an inner surface layer of wood or metal sheet. The upstream side of the fan is in communication with a chamber 40 adapted to receive a supply of cold dry nitrogen gas. In operation, after the spray of liquid nitrogen droplets issuing from an arcuate spray head 36 has been vaporized, the resultant cold and dry nitrogen gas passes over the workpieces 30 before excess gas passes into a vent 42, from which at least some of the gas is recirculated to the chamber 40. The vent 42 is fitted with a non-return valve to reduce the loss of cold dry nitrogen from the chamber each time the door is opened.
