Abstract

1287189 Valves E W WALTER and M A DUMONT 16 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 12591/70 Heading F2V [Also in Divisions F1 and H1] A solenoid-operated inlet valve for admitting air to an intake manifold 14, Fig. 2, has a first valve member 42 and a larger second valve member 39, the solenoid having primary and secondary windings energized when simultaneously a first switch is closed by release of an accelerator pedal and a second switch is closed by the increase of engine speed above the normal idling speed, to open the first valve and subsequently to open the second valve. When the engine is over-running with pedal 19, Fig. ], released the normally open switch 122 is closed, inlet manifold vacuum is high and the high engine speed causes engine cooling fan 11 to direct an air current on to sail 133 to close switch 124. Primary and secondary windings 90 and 91 are energized to raise valve plunger 42, Fig. 2, thereby allowing ambient air to flow via screen 110, openings 57, 46 and bore 33 to relieve the high inlet manifold vacuum. Upward movement of the valve plunger 42 raises pin 85 to lift contact breaker arm (99), Fig. 3 (not shown), to de-energize the primary winding 90. The reduction of the inlet manifold vacuum already effected allows the secondary winding to open the valve 39.
