Abstract
1,043,865. Regulating. M. G. MAY. July 11, 1963 [July 12,1962; Jan. 30, 1963], No. 27548/63. Heading FIB. An exhaust throttle valve of a spark-ignition engine is closed at idling and low loads. In Fig. 1 the exhaust throttle comprises an eccentrically pivoted spring-loaded plate 36 which is opened by the flow of exhaust gases, the strength of spring 19 being adjusted so that the valve closes at idling. The closed position is determined by an adjustable stop 74 which may be magnetic and attracts a block 75 attached by a leaf spring to the valve spindle 17 when the valve is nearly closed to hold the valve firmly closed. The spring 19 acts through a lever 16 on spindle 17 and its moment decreases as the valve opens. A portion of the valve may be formed by a bimetallic strip 40 which bends in the opening direction as the temperature of the exhaust gases increases. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the exhaust throttle 57 is urged open by the flow of exhaust gases and is urged closed by intake manifold suction acting in chamber 52 on diaphragm 53. Ports 59 permit a small flow of exhaust gases when the valve 57 is closed. In Fig. 7 (not shown) the valve 104 is urged open by the flow of exhaust gases and is closed by intake manifold suction acting on diaphragm 124 connected to the valve lever 108 through a spring 121. The valve is positively opened at loads above low load by a link 131 connected to the accelerator lever 130 and engaging a lost-motion slot 134 in lever 108. A magnet 202 co-operates with lever 108 to hold the valve closed. In Fig. 9 (not shown) the valve 104 is urged closed by an electromagnet 172 the force of which is controlled by a switch 170 controlled by the accelerator pedal. Above a predetermined load, the current in coil 172 is reversed to urge the valve in the opening direction.
