Abstract

1286367 Coating CELANESE CORP 14 Jan 1970 [14 Jan 1969] 1762/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division D1] A product comprising a resin and carbon fibres, especially graphite fibres, preferably containing at least 90% carbon, is made by a process in which, directly after leaving the carbonisation zone in which they are formed or a zone in which they are heated in an inert atmosphere to a carbonisation temperature until all vaporisable substances have been removed and, in either case, before the fibres reabsorbs such substances, coating them with a solventless A-stage thermosetting resin by spraying, padding or immersion, heating the coated fibres to convert the resin to the B stage and terminating the heating while the resin on the fibres is in the B-stage. Suitable resins are epoxy, polyester and phenolic resins. which may include curing agents and accelerators. The fibres may be in the form of a yarn, filament bundle or tape and may be passed continuously through the heating and coating steps.
