Abstract

1,205,852. Carbon fibre reinforced resins. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 11 June, 1969 [26 June, 1968], No. 30615/68. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C7] Carbon fibres, e.g. in the form of hanks or twists of multi-filament strands, woven mats or fabrics, which may contain fibres other than of carbon (e.g. glass), are coated with one or more ionizable resins by electrodeposition to produce carbon fibre reinforced plastics articles. The ionizable resin is preferably a phenolic or thermosetting acrylic resin, but may be any addition copolymer or polycondensation product, e.g. unsaturated maleinized drying oil, epoxide or alkyd resin, or phenol or melamine formaldehyde resin, and contain -COOH, -SO 4 H, -SO 3 H and -OPO(OH) 2 anionic, or -N(R 3 )<SP>+</SP>Cl<SP>-</SP>, -NH 3 <SP>+</SP>Cl<SP>-</SP> or quaternary ammonium cationic groups. The coated fibres may be formed into the reinforced article in the absence of further plastics material, or may be dispersed in a different thermoplastic or thermosetting resin, e.g. comprising unsaturated polyester such as formed by interesterification of a (e.g. neopentyl) glycol, phthalic or trimellitic and maleic anhydride. Coating is preferably carried out in an aqueous medium containing a resin having carboxyl groups neutralized with ammonia and feeding the fibre over phosphor bronze strips. Two or more coats may be applied by successive immersions. The coated fibre may be hot pressed to give a cured laminate. For example, dried tows of coated fibres may be soaked in an epoxy resin solution, then transferred to a " leaky " mould which, with the plunger top pressed down and surplus resin allowed to drain away, is oven heated and cured at 125‹ C.
