Abstract

1308912 Crimping yarns COURTAULDS Ltd 20 July 1970 [21 July 1969] 36542/69 Headings D1F and D1P In the production of crimped yarn having reduced shrinkage in hot water, freshly extruded, undrawn polyamide filaments (which may be assembled into yarn form) are impregnated with a cross-linking agent, as may be applied by one or more furnishing rollers also carrying lubricant such as an oil-in-water emulsion, drawn, crimped as by a false-twist process, heated to set the filaments in the crimped configuration and to effect cross-linking. The cross-linking agent may be a heat hardenable synthetic resin, e.g. urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, dicyandiamideformaldehyde, guanidine-formaldehyde and combinations thereof, methylol amino-epihalohydrin compounds as described in Specification No. 796,815, resins formed by the reaction of formaldehyde and acrolein, polyepoxy resins; also difunctional cross-linking agents, e.g. methylated methylol urea, N-substituted methylol triazones, methylol N-substituted triazines, methylated and unmethylated methylol 1,2- propylene ureas, and methylated and unmethylated methylol ethylene ureas. If the agent is a methylol derivative the reaction of the agent and the polyamide of the filaments may be accelerated by a latent catalyst effective at temperatures above 100‹C, e.g. magnesium halide, zinc fluoroborate, magnesium perchlorate.
