Abstract

128,589. Constantinesco, G., and Haddon, W. July 14, 1916. Bell signals; hydraulic telegraphs.-In a system for transmitting power by means of a series of periodic changes of volume and pressure travelling along a liquid column as described in Specification 9029/13, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.], rapid rises of pressure are impressed above the mean pressure of the liquid, and means may be provided for absorbing reflected waves, the system being applicable for actuating railway and other signals, telegraphs, valves and hammers. The generator piston may be operated by a cam or by giving it a blow, and the transmission line may be connected to a vessel of liquid, as described in Specification 4349/15, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.]. Liquid may be supplied to the line by a foot pump, from a tank or by the means described in Specification 17856/15, [Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.]. Where a tank is used, a cock is provided in the connexion between the line and the tank capable of allowing liquid to flow from the tank to the line or vice versa, or of stopping this flow and opening the transmission line to the atmosphere. The generator shown in Fig. 4 comprises a plunger f forced into a chamber b by a blow on its upper end. The increased pressure in the chamber acts on a ball b and moves a piston l to remove a valve k from its seat, following which the piston l has an increased motion imparted to it, so that an impulse is sent along the transmission line p, this impulse unseating a spring controlled valve q. The valve is provided with an orifice and absorbs reflected waves. In a ship's telegraph, a plunger 1, Fig. 6, is suddenly pressed down and causes a second plunger 3 to send an impulse along a transmission line 4, the line being connected at each end to a cylinder 5 containing a piston 9 adapted to strike a bell 6 through a pipe 8 and an aperture 7 in the plunger 1.
