Abstract

11,005. Johnson, A. H. May 26. Points and switches. -Railway switch points and signals are operated by electro-hydraulic or electro - pneumatic means. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, an electric motor m, which can be caused to rotate in either direction, transfers mineral oil or other liquid from ore cylinder to the other of a two-ended ram r, the pump or " gear used being of the form shown in Fig. 5. The locking-bar e<11> and the points are worked through the lever e<1> and escapement crank e in the manner shown in Fig. 1. A bypass w, provided with a valve f, shunts the pump p. The valve is held down during the working of the motor by an electro-magnet n, which shunts the motor m. The circuit of the electro-magnet n is broken at i or j as soon as the stroke of the ram is complete, the by-pass being then opened across the pump. The circuit of the electro-magnet is also adapted to be broken at the contact 5 or 6, by means of the small plungers h, h<1>, if the pressure on either side of the valve f should become excessive owing to an obstruction at the points or other cause. Instead of controlling the by-pass valve by an electro-magnet, it may be pressed on to its seat by a spring and be lifted mechanically when the ram reaches the end of the stroke. A piston, diaphragm, or other equivalent device may be used instead of the ram r. The by-pass may be formed in the ram itself.
