Exciting.- A shunt-wound electric motor adapted to function as a generator when braking is controlled by means of a variable - speed dynamo - electric machine connected in series with the shunt field winding and in opposition to the impressed voltage. In the arrangement shown, the auxiliary machine 10 is driven from the motor shaft 6 through friction gearing 8, 12, and is speed is controlled by moving the friction disk 12 by means of the hand-operated lever 17, 18. The machine 10 may be provided with interpoles excited by series coils. The invention may be applied to motors for driving motor-vehicles, hoisting machinery, conveyers, paper and rubber mills, and other machinery.
